Curriculum Intent

Our curriculum is built on the core values of resilience, pride, respect, ambition, responsibility, and our commitment to high aspirations and high expectations. These values shape every aspect of our provision and ensure that all students feel they belong and are supported to thrive academically and personally.

Our teachers deliver a broad, balanced and knowledge rich curriculum that enables every learner to experience success. Strong foundations in communication, language, reading, writing, numeracy and personal development ensure that students are supported to access all subjects with confidence. Everyone who needs reading support receives timely, high-quality intervention.

We design pathways — including Thrive, Booster programmes, and additional English/Maths routes — so that students receive the right support at the right time while still experiencing a rich, ambitious curriculum. At KS3 and KS4, our subject choices maintain breadth while offering meaningful progression routes. At KS5, we provide a strong academic curriculum that prepares students for university, apprenticeships or employment.

Students are encouraged to take pride in their achievements, enjoy learning and build the resilience needed for lifelong success.

Assessment is purposeful, supported by robust and proportionate monitoring and evaluation processes, to ensure students achieve well, know more, remember more and do more over time.

Our intent is simple: to develop ambitious, responsible and resilient learners who are proud of who they are, confident in what they can accomplish, and fully prepared for their next steps in education, work and life.

We are committed to providing high quality learning and teaching, enabling everyone to reach their full potential, whatever their age, ability, gender or ethnicity.

Quality First Teaching: The Non Negotiables

To support the implementation of consistent quality first teaching at Aston Academy, the following non-negotiables are used as a teaching and learning framework:

  • Meet and greet
  • Do Now Task
  • Modelling
  • Questioning (Cold Call and depth)
  • ERIC- Everyone Reading In Class
  • Live marking/ Navigating the room
  • End and Send.

Each of the non negotiables are adapted by teachers to meet the needs of individuals in each class. This enables all students, in all lessons, each day to reach their full potential.

Students are expected to demonstrate and develop positive Character in the Classroom habits to support them becoming independent learners.
