Curriculum Intent

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics enables our students to understand the world around them.

It provides an opportunity to explore different beliefs and to gain a better understanding of the diversity of the human experience.

It also helps our students to develop critical thinking skills, as they learn to analyse and evaluate different religious beliefs and practices.

Through Religion, Philosophy and ethics our students develop respect and empathy for others whilst also learning more about themselves and their place in our diverse and ever changing world.

KS3 RPE Learning Journey

GCSE RE Learning Journey

Section 71(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998

Every pupil has a legal entitlement to Religious Education (RE). RE is a necessary part of a ‘broad and balanced curriculum’ and must be provided for all registered pupils in state-funded schools in England, including those in the sixth form, unless withdrawn by their parents (or withdrawing themselves if they are aged 18 or over). Inclusive RE is essential for students to be able to discuss issues which impact society and through learning about new religions and cultures can ‘experience the world’ enabling their growth into well rounded adults.

The ACET academies will discuss requests from parents and carers, to withdraw their child from Religious Education lessons, given in the school in accordance with the school’s basic curriculum.

This is set out in section 71(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.

We welcome a discussion with parents should you wish to withdraw your child from RE, so that an informed decision can be made. We will always support parent, and carer wishes but also feel that an understanding of many religions is beneficial to all students.

Once withdrawn students can be offered alternative RE teaching but are not required to be offered any other subject content. There can also be no cost incurred to the academy.
