Extended Project Qualification
Extended Project Qualification
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) allows learners to develop or extend a variety of skills through the completion of a project of their choosing. This project may be inspired by their other studies or by an area of personal interest but must allow for detailed research and analysis. The Extended Project is from A* to E, where A* is the highest and is the equivalent to half an A Level. The three elements of the EPQ; report or artefact, production log and presentation are marked holistically at the end of the process. The centre is not allowed to give the students any indication of marks until the assessment process is complete.
Entry requirements
Grade 5 or above in English Language and to be on target in your other courses.
Appeals
Students who wish to appeal the mark that they have been awarded will need to follow the following procedure:
- Arrange a time to view your EPQ with the supervisor who will explain the reasons for the mark.
- If you decide you want to appeal, confirm in writing by emailing post16@astonacademy.org and explain your reasons for the appeal.
- The marked EPQ will then be sent to a person with experience in the EPQ who has not been involved in the EPQ course in school.
- The independent review is final and this is the mark that will be sent to the mark board – where it may be subject to further moderation by the exam board (AQA).
The role of the Coordinator
The EPQ Coordinator acts as a guide and support throughout the EPQ course. Their role is to approve the students’ working title, to teach the skills element of the course, attend each student’s presentation and ensure marking is standardised. Coordinators do not direct students’ actions as teachers might be act as a supervisor for the course.
