Our Partnerships: The University of Sheffield

School Direct at Aston Community Education Trust

Aston is the Lead School in two School Direct partnerships. The terms of each partnership are different from each other, so applicants are advised to read them very carefully before applying.  One partnership is with the University of Sheffield and the other is with Sheffield Hallam University.

The University of Sheffield Partnership

At Aston Academy we have a long standing relationship with the University of Sheffield. We have formed a cluster partnership with several local secondary schools to provide School Direct Training places in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, Physics with Maths and MFL. These schools have a range on contexts and cover a large geographical area to ensure successful applicants receive a varied experience.

Our partnership schools are:

The secondary places are on the School Direct Training Programme and successful applicants will have to pay tuition fees to the University of Sheffield. However, bursaries are available from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL). http://www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/funding.aspx

The Aston cluster co-ordinates the Training Placements required for successful applicants to achieve Qualified Teacher Status, including a full PGDE qualification and Master’s level credits. Although we cannot guarantee employment for the NQT year, we will endeavour to assist successful trainees in securing a job as far as we can.

More information about the courses can be found on the UCAS Teacher Training website. http://www.ucas.com/apply/teacher-training or on the University of Sheffield website: http://www.shef.ac.uk/education/courses/pgde/scdirect
